At our chiropractic center our examinations and procedures are geared toward detection and correction of joint dysfunctions. Often times a sore back isn't just a tight muscle. Muscles attach to bone through tendons, and bones connect together with ligaments. Therefore, it is a muscle joint complex along with assessing the nerves that exit the spine and innervate the muscles. The procedures we use are therefore specifically selected for your spine and nervous system health. There are a couple of things that you should expect when you have a first visit at our clinic.

The First Visit takes between 30-45 minutes, depending on what type of treatment you might need.

Our Examination consists of a thorough spinal and nervous system exam which includes Range of Motion (global and segmental), reflexes, muscle strength, proprioception, and palpation. Palpation essentially is checking your spine or area of concern by hand. With this exam the doctor can feel areas of your spine that may need treatment. Spinal position, curvatures and muscle tone can also be examined as it relates. This examination could involve several components.

Spinal X-rays may be taken depending on your age and situation. There are many reasons why we would not take X-rays on certain patients including pregnancy, most children, recent usable spinal X-rays and some other various situations. Aside from these situations, X-rays are a common part of the examination process when looking for vertebral subluxations. X-rays give us important information including the position of the spinal bones, and the quality of the spine and safety of adjusting it. -- We do not take X-rays at our clinic. If our doctors believe an X-ray would be beneficial, they would write out a requisition form and send you to the hospital for the X-rays (which are covered under your Alberta Health Care Plan).

With this important information we can make a more accurate determination of the type of adjustments your spine needs as well as the ongoing frequency of your care. Your X-rays will be explained to you and covered in detail. Depending on the reason for your initial visit, a care plan may be recommended, as spinal care is important.
